Type Face Post Cards

These postcards where created as the end goal of the Typeface research project. The research part of the project is to research the history and inspiration behind a chosen type face. The design goal of the project was to make stamps ( Though, due to inspiration of the chosen type face post cards were made ).

The typeface chosen was Mercato Variable created by Mateusz MACHALSKI. Alongside other designers Michal Gorczyca and Malgorzata Bartosik.

Mateusz Machalski, is a Polish Graphic Designer that from 2009 – 2014 studied at the Faculty of Graphic arts in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He created over 30 typefaces that can be found in adobe fonts. For example, podium soft variable, Afronaut, Nocturne Serif and of course Mercato Variable ( which he and his team took 3 years to create ). Alongside designing these fonts he also leads workshops, conducts research projects and lectures majorly in Poland but also beyond.

This font was chosen because this font was thought up and possibly inspired by South America. It was inspired by a drawing form of calligraphy. Also with the creators stating: “ I want to create a typeface that is written and expressive on one hand and thrown into a geometric frame on the other. “ This quote makes this font an excellent choice because of this all round feel, and that it is inspired by price tags.

This typeface has a unique feel from the other typefaces. It looks culturally diverse, and that alongside the fact that was thought up in South America helped this font to be chosen. This feeling about the font is ever more prevalent with Mateusz describing his desire for what the font is. “ I wanted to create a typeface that was, on the one hand, written, expressive and organic, and on the other hand, placed in a geometric frame. “ This font can fill multiple needs so it is not bound to one design with him also saying that “ The whole family can be used wherever we need dynamic and warm forms – it will work well in logos, posters and headers. “

This is a big factor for what this font as chosen. And the cards have South American locations. Each for Rio, Machu Piccu and Iguazu Falls respectively. Using different looks with image trace + filters, image trace and coloring with your own palette and silhouette design.

Rio made with image trace + filters style

Machu Piccu made with image trace style
