West Valley College Hackathon T-Shirt Design

This project was to create a T-Shirt design for West Valley College’s First Annual Hackathon.

West Valley Design Group was tasked by Math Engineering Science Achievement to create a shirt for the Hackathon, to provide a sense of uniformity across team lines, stressing community values and goals. My initial design was chosen which began the process of finalizing a design that would be printed on a complimentary shirt for everyone.

The Hackathon had the goal of creating solutions for ethical and social good, to help the community which the event stresses with its collaborative structure. Also with splitting people into teams to brainstorm solutions to current problems. I wanted to stress this goal by also connecting it to technology and innovation. This goal and rounds of review produced this final design.

Here is the first round of designs that were drafted. Here is exploring typefaces, graphics and color palettes. The color palates were taken from a flyer advertising the event and graphics were taken from the idea of entrepreneurship and West Valley College’s iconography.

After review the leader of MESA wanted to combine the 2 ideas into 1 design, using the type of the second option and the graphic and colors of the first option. Which was used to make the next stage. 2 ideas for new graphics came to be and 3 ideas of color palettes were chosen then presented to the climate.

When presenting these ideas, the client has decided on number 4. They picked it by the colors matching the colors of MESA and the circuit board background and lightbulb representing its tech influence and brainstorming and entrepreneurship goal.

The client also wanted another design for the certificate that will be awarded for the winning team, matching the shirt design giving the event a sort of visual identity.

This process resulted in the final design that represented these goals for the event.

This design achieved the goal of providing uniformity across team lines and provided a sense of community and togetherness. With participation and a shirt to present to others in the wider community.
